Water damage occurs when water has been left standing idly for some time in a certain area or a confine space. While water is known to be a life source and a very effective natural cleaning element – it has the ability to reduce wood and other home structural materials into their basic form. Not to mention that it could leave stain marks that makes a certain finished surface unsightly.

To avoid the incidence of water damage, the entry of water within a close or confined environment must be prevented at all cost. The most common sources of water entry are busted pipes, cracks in ceiling and walls, and destroyed gutters among others. These water entry points must be maintained regularly and fixed immediately once a defect has been detected.

The key is to remove the water at once by using a mop and water bucket if the volume is small. However if the water is several feet high, it is advisable that a wet vacuum pump is used for convenience and efficiency. Once the water has been fully extracted, it is advisable that the area is cleaned with a warm soapy solution which could be applied by using a sponge or a brush to remove grime and dirt which were left behind by the water.

After brushing or sponging the place with soap and water, remove the suds by using a pail and a clean rag if the area is relatively small. But if the area is quite large, is better to use a garden hose to make rinsing easier and faster. While a disinfectant may not be required it is advisable to apply it to kill off remaining germ and fungal spores which can be considered as sources of illness or diseases.

Before any water damage action is implemented all floor coverings, wall decorations, curtains, bed clothes and other furniture and fixtures should be removed from the area for proper inspection and repair. Rugs and wall-to-wall carpets should be disposed immediately and not be attempted for re-use, because carpets and rugs which came in contact with the water is hard to restore. It is wise to consider comparing the cost of repair or restoration with the cost of replacing any defective item, because if the cost of replacement is cheaper than the restoration procedure then it would help save money and effort.

The drying process and the immediate action in the remediation process are very essential to prevent the further deterioration of any structural material.

We all want to protect things that we own. We know that even if our things are not that valuable, they are still very important to us. This is why we always try to do our best to protect our belongings. Whether these things are big or small, the important thing is we keep them safe. One of the things that people watch out for is water damage.

Water damage occurs when anything you own is damaged because of the presence of water. In fact, in some cases, the destruction sustained by your belongings may come from water damage on something else like your water pipes or water tanks. Sometimes it can also come from natural resources. It can come from water coming from a higher level like a hill or a mountainside or even an overflow from a river or a stream. These things happen and we have to do what we can to get through this problem.

The most important thing when we talk about taking this kind of a problem is time. Time is very important as it can be the difference between saving your things and throwing it in the trash can. Water works both fast and slow. This means that your things can get ruined in an instant and also over a period of time.

Water can totally soak up your things and render them useless very quickly. On some things however, water may only play a key part in ruining it. For example, some of your documents can get wet because the water pipe broke, spraying water everywhere. Those which got directly hit may already be ruined in a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, those which did not get wet because of the water pipe can slowly get wet and be ruined eventually because water will get to it sooner or later. Water then could either destroy the biodegradable material or make the ink run.

Other type of items can be also be ruined by water damage. Electronic equipment or devices are easily destroyed by water. Televisions, radios, cellular phones and other gadgets are never allowed to get wet because if they do get wet, chances are they are no longer of any use.

This is why it is important that people are aware about water damage and learn how to prevent it from happening. As much as possible, people should check their household for possible sources of water. They should check if their pipes are rusty or leaky and they should check if it clogged or even just unaligned. They should also check where they put their valuables. Electronic things should be elevated from the floor so that if some flooding occurs or some water spills in the general area, these equipments will remain dry and undamaged.

People easily take for granted these small adjustments that can save their things. They should understand that water damage is a real threat and while it is something that they can take care of before it happens, when it does happen; things can turn out very bad.

There have been a lot of changes in the weather lately and some seasons clash with one another. We start to experience warm weather in December and very strong hurricanes during the summer months. These events cause a lot of effects on our health and our homes. As a sudden change in climate affects us with a cold or a headache, it also may cause an almost unnoticeable wear and tear to our shelter. Soon enough we start to experience overflowing of water from the inside to our rooms and basement causing us to be a little bit frustrated by our current situation. Though some circumstances are completely unavoidable, the coming of a stormy weather gets us a little peaked while thinking of the water removal process in front of us.

Performing water removal from our homes may be easy and tedious in mild cases but it can also be frighteningly expensive when it comes to severe flooding. In this case, we sometimes have no choice but to choose the proper company to handle the task. Water damage to our homes brings a lot of changes on our property and most of the time, money spent on water removal companies are worth every penny. Though they may have all the tools and materials needed for the job to be done, we also have to be aware that there are several precautions that we have to take to protect us, our family and our pets.

First it is important to check if the structure is still strong. Due to water damage, some parts of the property may be weak and slight activity inside may cause the walls or the ceiling to cave in. If this is the situation, please do not attempt to do water removal by yourself. It is better to let a professional water damage company to take a look at your property to have a more accurate conclusion on the matter.

Also, if your home is determined to be temporarily inhabitable, make arrangements on your family’s lodging while the reconstruction is being done. Next is to make sure that all power supply in your home is cut off. Disabling the main circuit breaker panel is necessary for the safety of everyone involved including the company which will be doing water removal coming in to do their task. These groups have their own way to get their machines running so do not fret about their electricity needs.

Turning off the main water supply to your property is another necessary action. In the event of the pipes being damaged, the flow of water may be continuous and the whole water removal process would be unsuccessful. If you can not do it because of some reason, contact a plumber to safely and efficiently turn off the water supply.

The process of water removal does not rest solely on the water removal companies; it also needs a lot of assistance from the homeowner. Being able to help in the work of these professionals could make the whole process faster, meaning less water damage on your property.

Fungi are microorganisms that grow in every type of ecosystem and are found anywhere around the world. Fungi are nature’s recycling plants, which breaks down organic materials into basic nutrients that are absorbed back to nature to complete the cycle of life. Fungi include molds, yeast, mildew, mushrooms, puffballs and other fungi that grow on dead plants and trees. Fungi like molds thrive on wet and damp places and rely on organic materials for food. It has been proven by health organizations that molds are health threats and should not be allowed to proliferate in a home and affect humans. When molds and fungi are seen in a home, proper mold removal procedures should be performed.

Molds grow on organic materials such as paper, cloth, carpets, leather, wood, and insulation. They thrive when moist conditions exist in an indoor space and environment. Unless mold removal is performed in a home, humans and animals can be exposed to molds and their by-products through direct contact or through the inhalation, particularly if mold spores are released into the air. Molds reproduce by making spores which lands on organic and damp materials where they can germinate and grow. Molds can affect the health of humans in a variety of ways depending on the species that invaded the home and the length of time that the individual or the occupants of the house were exposed to the molds. This emphasizes the need for proper mold removal services whenever mold is encountered in the home. Some of these effects can be categorized into allergy, infection, irritation and toxicity.

Allergies are the most common symptoms for mold exposure. When mold removal is neglected, and the occupants of the home are exposed to molds for a certain period, these people may develop allergic reactions when their skin or respiratory system comes into contact with the molds or its spores. Allergies from molds can be mild or can be severe, depending on the human’s reaction to the mold. Allergic fungal sinusitis and allergic rhinitis are common symptoms and reactions to mold that if not treated immediately can lead to diseases that are more serious in nature.

Infections from molds are not very common although they can occur to people with weak immune systems brought about by disease or if under treatment from certain drugs. Unless mold removal is performed, these individuals can contract nonsocomial infections or aspergilloses. These infections can affect the skin and the eyes, and can also endanger the lungs and other organs and bodily systems.

As molds consume dead organic matter, they can release alcohols or aldehydes, and other acidic molecules. These compounds can come into contact with humans and can cause irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and the respiratory system. The type of compounds released by molds depends on the type of materials and substances on which they consume as food. One type of molds can release a highly toxic arsine gas after it consumed arsenic containing pigments from the wallpaper it is attacking. If left untreated and mold removal is not performed, continuous irritation of the mucous membrane can have an adverse effect on the central nervous system, which results in various symptoms as headache, inability to concentrate and dizziness.

When a home encounters mold growth, it is important to take immediate action, perform mold removal, and prevent further proliferation of these microorganisms. Performing these activities at the soonest possible time can ensure a healthy environment for the home and avoid the adverse effects that exposure to molds can bring.

Water is a destructive natural element which could be controlled with appropriate devices and equipment. When a house is prone to having a flooded basement, it requires preventive efforts in order to save the house’s structural materials and prevent the spread of any disease that could easily affect the human respiratory and digestive system.

The key to saving a property once a flooded basement happens is to act at once by eliminating the water from the flooded basement as soon as the problem is discovered. If the water in the flooded basement came from a sewage backup, it really gets to be a big problem since it does not only make everything filthy but the smell it produces could be unbearable due to the different organic materials it contains. But this is not to say that if the water came from a busted pipe or a leak from the foundations walls, it is not dirty. Water which is mixed with any environmental organic matters and has been left to stand still in a confined space for a while is considered contaminated and filled with harmful microorganisms.

Given the effects of having a flooded basement, the proper cleaning and disinfecting procedure is required to avoid any secondary problems to arise and develop. If the basement has not been properly cleaned and disinfected, it allows mold and other pathogens to grow and thrive within the basement area. Likewise, the drying process is very important because if the basement is not thoroughly dried after properly cleaning and disinfecting, it invites the propagation of harmful microbial spores. Needless to say, once these secondary problems happen it would require another cleanup process that will require insurance, money, time and effort all over again.

While you may know the basic facts of cleaning a flooded basement it is still important to emphasize that the cleanup process of a flooded basement needs appropriate personal cleaning apparel. This means that should the home owner decide to clean out the flooded basement then wearing goggles, rubber gloves, rubber boots and an overall suit is required. Aside from this, when wounds, open punctures or sores and skin lesions are present, it is essential to treat these bodily openings first before proceeding with the task of a flooded basement cleanup. But just to make everything safe, it is recommended that individuals who have wounds should not take part in the clean up process to prevent the cause of infection.

Getting floods within the basement often means expense and absolute disruption of a person’s normal daily routine. There are some ways to prevent basement flooding like installing a sump pump system or a backwater valve. Most of the procedures of installing preventive devices against the entry of water within a residential structure require the appropriate permit from the local municipality office. Installation of such would also need a qualified plumber so that the mechanisms are assured to be correctly fitted. While purchasing and having these devices may entail expensive initial expenses, it would at least save the residence owner from having to spend and be bothered time and again with flood water in the basement.

Maintaining the beauty of your yard is just as important as maintaining the beauty of your home. But like the interior of your home, flood can damage your lawn and your yard. Flood carries dust and silt, and after it recedes, you will find all those dirt covering your well-manicured lawn. Heavy wind can also shake twigs and leaves from trees and plants and carry them to your yard.

Your pool will also start to look like one big tank of dirty water. Your kid’s outdoor playground are muddied and, for all you know, infested with bacteria and germs carried by dirty floodwater.

Doing flood damage cleanup of your yard may be a second priority to cleaning the interior of your home. Nevertheless, it is also integral in restoring overall safety in your home. As you would before doing flood damage cleanup of the interior of your home, document the damage on your yard. You need solid proof and record of the damage for insurance claims. Some insurance policies cover water damage to outdoor furniture, lawns, and ornamental plants.

The one advantage of doing flood damage cleanup of your yard is that you don’t have to go through the tedious job of water removal anymore as much as you would inside your home. Over time, water in the yard will seep into the ground and disappear. In fact, it would be better to wait for water to recede before doing flood damage cleanup of your yard.

As a general rule, do not turn your yard into a dumping ground or repository of flood-damaged items from your house. Dispose garbage, food, and other perishables right away.

In any case, if there are pools of water, such as on buckets, containers, cans, and barrels, empty them right away. This is to prevent mosquitoes from turning your yard into a breeding ground. Where there are pools of water that you can’t completely remove, pour in chemical solution formulated to kill mosquito larvae. Before using any product, make sure it is pet-safe.

With the same argument, you need to remove dirty water from your pool right away. Empty your pool right away. Clean and disinfect your pool, then rinse with clean water. Flush out water again, then let dry before using it again.

Remove also standing water from gutters. Free your eaves, downspouts, and gutters of leaves and twigs carried by the wind. Clean ditches and drains as well. Cleaning your drain systems is important to prevent future water damage in your home by making sure that rainwater is properly carried away from your home.

To do flood damage cleanup of the outside of your home, hose down pavements with clean water to remove mud. Do this also to clean your lawn of mud, silt, saltwater, and debris. When hosing down your lawn, do not aim at the roots of the grass as it would damage them. If there’s more than an inch of mud on your yard, however, or if floodwater was contained with industrial chemicals, consider replacing your lawn rather than merely doing flood damage cleanup. Chemicals can damage the quality and may even kill grasses on your lawn.

The storm has passed. The floods from the streets and the surrounding community have receded. People are coming out of their houses, inspecting everything for any serious damage to their homes and properties. Others are checking friends over to see if everyone is all right. Everything is going back to where it was before.

Life appears to normalize, now that the wrath of Mother Nature has subsided, except for the remaining water in the kitchen and in the basement. In the aftermath of the storm, homeowners are usually faced with this predicament, which calls forth effective water removal services.

It does not need sophisticated technologies to perform water removal services. It is, however, still wise to consult experts regarding the actual situation of your water-damaged house. There may be underlying problems already present that will not be seen by untrained eyes. Still, for minor floodings that involve only a portion of the house, do-it-yourself water removal services could be utilized and achieve effective results.

Water removal services for flooded kitchens and basements should be done immediately right after the storm and the floods have subsided. Prolonging this activity could result to further damage and might create the risk for molds and mildew infestations, which are considered health hazards. The first thing to accomplish here is to completely remove any standing water left by the floodwaters. This can be done using submersible pumps, manual pumps, or the old bucket and pail routine. The important thing here is to remove as much water as possible and avoid further water damage.

Another integral part of water removal services is to remove moisture from the floorings, tiles and walls. Water seepage can be seen from excretions emanating from the tiles. These can be dried out by pointing air movers or air blowers directly to the affected areas. Linoleum and vinyl tiles can be removed and re-installed later on. The key thing here is to dry out the subflooring, particularly if this is made from hardwood. Carpets should be removed and dried separately. Severely water damaged carpets should not be used anymore, particularly if the fibers are organic. This prevents mold infestation to take place. To ensure successful water removal services, the affected area should be well ventilated. Opening all windows and floors could do the job, but this can be hastened by utilizing air blowers and dehumidifiers, if these equipments are available.

Water removal services also include moisture removal from furniture and other belongings that have been water damaged from the flood. It is important to note that organic materials such as wood, paper, cardboard and fibers can be infested by molds after they have been exposed to water for a prolonged period. The owners should make a quick decision as to which item should be discarded right away, or which should be restored.

For wood and wooden items, drying them out in the sun is not a good idea. This could deform them significantly and could create cracks and separations in the wood grain. The best type of water removal services for these items is to perform slow drying by isolating them in an enclosed area, and adding dehumidifiers and water absorbing dessicants to remove the moisture.

Water damaged electrical appliances could be a tough one to address. Have these checked by proper technicians to avoid further damage. Beds and mattresses are also big problems as these items could absorb so much water that restoration attempts could prove ineffectual. Try to dry them out in the sun after cleaning with detergents and bleach. After drying, use deodorizers and disinfectants to prevent mold infestations.

Books, paper and other articles, just like wood, should not be dried abruptly under the sun, as these would deform, with pages sticking to each other and rendered unusable. Slow dry them through air blowing, ensuring that pages are loose during drying to prevent sticking.

There are other simple ways to perform water removal for water-damaged items from the house. The key thing here is to perform these items immediately to prevent further damage and worse, mold infestations, to take place and put the owner and family at risk.

Sewage backups can greatly imperil human health and wellbeing. Sewage wastes and wastewater contain every imaginable virus, germ, and other harmful microorganism. Just imagine them residing in your cellar, kitchen, bedroom, and crawlspaces— and we don’t even need to blatantly stress the importance of sewage damage cleanup. Then, of course, there’s the obvious reason why you should do sewage damage cleanup right away. Sewage backups are extremely dirty and they give one of the nastiest odors your nose has ever detected.

Sewage damage cleanup requires stricter and more cleaning practices than flood or water damage cleanup. This is because of the high-risk element carried by sewages. Still, the extent or severity of sewage damage cleanup would depend on the severity of sewage damage.

First, what is sewage and why does sewage backup happen?

Sewage refers to the solid and liquid wastes that we flush down our johns, sinks, and bathtub and floor drains. They run down an elaborate pipe system, which runs from houses to municipal main sewer system.

Sewage backup can happen if a material gets stuck along the pipe, if the pipe leaks or breaks, or if the sewer system receives more waste that it can handle. Any of these reasons can cause sewage to run back up your drain pipes and flow out of your john, sink, and other household drains. For instance, during a party, excessive use of household drains can cause your sewer system to suddenly malfunction. This happens when you sewer tank doesn’t have enough load capacity to keep up with the amount of liquid and solid wastes suddenly being flushed down it.

When sewage backup of this sort happens, what you need to do is simply to pump out your sewer tank. Usually, overflow from this type of sewage backup is limited to floor drain so cleaning and disinfecting of contaminated area is not so hard. If there’s a clog in your drain, remove it using a plunger. Sanitize and disinfect areas accordingly.

Now, regardless of whatever type of sewer backup you encounter, never do sewage backup cleanup without using appropriate protective gear.

If the sewage backup extends beyond your bathroom doors and flows into the adjacent house area, the sewage damage cleanup is going to be more extensive, naturally. First, you have to remove your children from the vicinity or immediate vicinity of contamination.

Bring two buckets into the area that needs to be contaminated. One bucket should contain detergent solution, and other should contain rinse water. Use mop to clean contaminated floors, and towel to clean walls, furniture, and cabinets. Change detergent solution as soon as they get too gray. Rinse cleansed area with water. Change rinse water as frequently as needed also. Then, apply disinfectant or antiseptic solution on all contaminated surfaces. Leave solution for 15 minutes before rinsing areas.

The worst type of sewage damage that you can possibly encounter is when sewage-contaminated flood enters your home and contaminate not only your floors but also walls, beddings, clothes, and upholsteries. You can, of course, opt to do the sewage damage cleanup yourself. However, hiring a professional sewage damage cleanup company would be the less-riskier solution.
